It has been said that the Disney Studio was built on a mouse, but it all really began with a little girl and these ALICE COMEDIES produced from 1923 to 1927. When Walt Disney was 20 years old, he sold a series of modernized animated fairy tales to the Newman Theater chain in Kansas City. But his distributor fell into receivership and he was forced into bankruptcy. He came to Hollywood seeking work as a live-action film director, and was unsuccessful. Fortunately his pilot film, ALICE'S WONDERLAND, was seen by Margaret J. Winkler, who ordered this series of films, and Disney started the first animation studio in Los Angeles.
The original ALICE concept was a miniature version of "America's Sweetheart", Mary Pickford, and was played by Virginia Davis (1924-1925). The second Alice was Dawn O'Day, a.k.a. Anne Shirley (1925). By the third year, ALICE was updated with a junior "flapper" look, portrayed by Margie Gay (1925-1926), and finally by Lois Hardwick (1927). This program consists of Disney's earliest works that have not been seen in over 40 years.
